The Garden Wall Project Update

Those of you that have been reading the blog for a while will remember a project Jamie and I did in September of 2008. It was an arbor and garden wall. Well, it’s filling in nicely with Confederate Jasmine and I thought I would show you a couple of pictures of how it’s looking now. Incidentally, how we made this wall was the first article I had published in a magazine. It was like a wish coming true for me, photography and writing, two of my favorite things and I got paid for it!

Wall2

This wall is much larger than it looks in the photo; the width of the arbor is over four feet.

Wall1

After the trellises were built on each side we added window openings for extra interest. We thought they would nicely frame parts of the garden when you look thru them. You can tell by this photo it does the job well. The great part is you get a different view thru the windows when you stand in different areas. They seem to frame several things in the garden.

Window

We'll take a look again in another year, it should be nice and full at that point. :-) By that point maybe there will be more work done on the little courtyard that is going to be put in front of the wall.

What a beautiful garden wall! I know it's fragrant as well since that looks to be star jasmine growing on it. A perfect, evergreen vine! (Mine is blooming this week, too).

The views through the windows are wonderful as well!

Gorgeous!

I remember when this was published in Tennessee Gardener I think it was? I was so excited about the article because I had already read about your trellis wall here. It has filled in wonderfully. Time for an update in the magazine? I often wish magazines would post updates. Sigh, I guess this is what our blogs are for.

I really like the pink flowers lining the window--I noticed them right off, before the macro shot--which is nice to see, though, too! :)

Wow, how beautiful! I love it. I love the addition of windows, they give so much more interest. Is that jasmine covering the wall? I would love to stroll under the arbor! Carla

The entire thing is just gorgeous, Randy! You have done such a nice job and the windows really accentuate it. I love your (jasmine?) and the amount of spread it has developed! The pink blooms through the window add such charm to the view;-)

your wall turned out beautifully. I've always been fascinated with the idea of 'garden rooms'. This is the perfect way to create them.

I wasn't familiar with the vine since it doesn't grow here but it's lovely.

Wow, I'm impressed that it filled in so quickly. Love the framing of the rose through the window. Wouldn't it have been nice to have the photo in the article? How long does the jasmine bloom?

Randy, you simply must write to Southern Living. I think Steve Bender still works there. Ask for him.
I still have the article that appeared in the Gardener Magazine.
Your garden is absolutely beautiful. Be very proud of what you two have done!

Hi everyone, I changed the post so that the vine is identified as Confederate Jasmine. So that should answer Jan, Marnie and Carla's questions. :-) I'm sorry I should have put that in there to begin with.

Phillip, in our garden it will bloom for several weeks. At night when we open the back door to let Maxx go potty the house INSTANTLY fills with the scent of Jasmine.--Randy

That looks stunning, really. I love the windows, because they add a bit of intrigue and make it look somehow airier and more playful.

It took quite a lot of hard work and determination to get that wall and arbor set up, but once we got "the ball rolling" our job went along smoothly. It makes me proud, as I am sure Randy would agree, to see our hard work paying off so nicely.

Randy – wow! This is my first visit to your blog (saw you over at Gaudy Gardener) and I think your gardens are spectacular!

It's getting late here so I'll have to come back and look it all over. But I like your style.

Take care, John
