Blooming 10/13/10

What is this strange flower I found blooming in the garden? I believe it’s a carnivorous schnauzer bloom. It usually sprouts up under the Mexican Bush Sage and can be found munching on unsuspecting bumblebees and random pieces of mulch in the back part of the garden.

We got outside and cleaned up in the garden some this past weekend and I can’t believe how much better it looks. It’s amazing how much difference mowing the lawn and picking up debris can make in the appearance. The lawn is COMPLETELY devoid of any color or life.

Jamie and I both have not felt very well the past week or two. Our energy levels have been nonexistent I blame it on allergies. My nose is constantly stopped up and my eyes have been burning like someone threw sand in them. The goldenrods are in full bloom and the farmers are also baling cotton right now so the air is filled with allergens. Once I got outside and got going on the grass cutting I started to feel much better.

We didn’t kill ourselves trying to get everything done in one day. We just tidied up here and there and I was so pleased with the way everything looked when we were done. I really enjoyed getting out and walking around the grass paths later that evening looking at everything. I try not to walk on them too much because the grass is literally breaking off at ground level and I’m seeing a lot of dirt where there was once grass. I hope it grows back fast next spring.

Despite all the climate has done to it this past summer our little garden still rewards us with blooms. I have a sneaking suspicion winter will be coming early this year. It will only be a short matter of time and the garden will fall asleep for some much needed rest.

The type of flower you showed in the first photo is what we call a "hole digger" in my garden. I hope this little one doesn't learn to do that trick. Don't show him how to do that. It is amazing how expert they become with little or no encouragement. My garden is also in dire need of rain. Hose water isn't doing the trick. Hopefully I can keep alive all I would desperately miss. Your blooms are lovely. Soon the farmers will be finished with combining and planting. We will get a respite from the allergens.

I have yet to purchase your first blooming flower here. I'm not quiet that experienced in gardening yet, lol. Nice pops of color you have...hope you guys feel better soon..Allergies will zap the energy right out of you.

I bet you have ragweed blooming nearby. It's been terrible here, and even with allergy medication, only so much can be done.

I think your Japanese maple with the burned leaves will be fine. I have two or three with leaf tip burn, but goodness, the end of summer was horrible wasn't it? At one hundred seven for three, I felt burned up too.

It's cooler here now. I'm sending on to you two.~~Dee

Marvelous creature photos - both small and pollinating and furry and masticating. I think your garden is looking just fine. There's nothing like a few hours spend tidying to make both the garden and gardeners glow.

Hope you and Jamie feel better soon. Fall is the worst if you suffer from allergies. Beautiful blooms inspite of everything. Glad you were able to get out and do a bit of yardwork. It always makes me feel better to work in the garden.

This is my first time here, just followed your comment the the "Scenic Route". You certainly are creating an Eden and your photos are so beautiful. Many plants in your garden are also thriving in the tropics.

Sorry you two have not been feeling well. I have had trouble with allergies this fall too. I blame it on the dry conditions. Our grass looks like brown straw. Hopefully it will look better next year! Carla

We used to have a similar flower to your first one. We called her the un-gardener. lol

I love dogs' enthusiastic and intrepid philosophy of "Eat first, ask questions later.' So different from the cat's finicky approach. :)

Your blooms are lovely, but I could not get past the face in the first photo.

All the blooms are great, including the first one! I agree that mowing a lawn and picking up debris make a big difference!
