In the Garden 04.28.09

Well, I was off work yesterday for the holiday and the weather was so nice I wanted to piddle around in the yard some. We purchased some new plants to go in the little window planters so I got those nestled into their new homes. I don’t remember what the yellow flowers are, but I thought they looked pretty good together.

Our tiny little ‘Crepuscule ‘ rose is rewarding us with new blooms. It’s only about ten inches tall and wide, but it will grow.

This is clematis ‘Galore’. Jamie and I just started collecting them last year when we found some really reduced in price at one of the stores. We decided to let them grow up the same poles where we planted the roses.

I don’t know the name of this rose. It’s an old antique shrub rose and it has the most incredible scent. Do any of you know what it is?

Several weeks back Jan at Always Growing published a post about an azalea called ‘Amelia Rose’. I’m not a huge fan of azaleas although we have several, but when I saw this I had to have it. I was lucky enough to find it a couple of weeks ago. We bought two of them , one will mature to full size and the other is being trained into a tree.

This False Indigo Baptisia didn’t do a single thing last year and I almost shovel pruned it. I’m so glad I left it. What a beautiful color it is now.

These gladiolus are native to our area and can be found on roadsides and old home places. They are surprising slow to multiply, but are certainly a beautiful color.

I’m really pleased with this combination. We didn’t plan it this way, but I was noticing in the picture how nice these three plants look together. When they get a little growth on them it’s going to be very pretty.

Peggy Martin it showing off for us, this rose reminds me an awful lot of the wild roses around here we use to call seven sisters…

Last but not least is ‘Sugar Candy’. The irises are also putting on a show right now, but I’m saving that for another post.

It is all just gorgeous, Randy...just love it. In person it's got to be even better. The baptista is pretty...good thing you saved it. Your roses are spectacular...I don't have a good area for roses, other than my carpet roses...or knock-outs, or whatever they're called...Yours are wonderful. Our heatwave of 95+ degrees has passed, I hope--and it's raining today. Hopefully Spring will come back for a while, I don't want the humidity that was just here...it was almost unbearable. Later in the summer it will come back...that I know...but Spring is for temperate weather and I hope you are enjoying yours now too. Happy day to you guys...Jan

The glads are awesome. I just found a bunch at our hunting camp. They aren't blooming yet, but after they do I am going to go back and get them. I hope they are the same as yours. The false indigo is such a beautiful shade. All your photos are great as usual. Have a good one

Loved baptisia in IL, Randy - and am glad you now know why it's an old garden favorite.

Maybe your new yellow flowers in the planter are Wallflowers? Some of them smell wonderful.

Wonderful flowers!

I love your climbing roses wrapping around the wooden post! I have always wanted to do the same on a trellis in my garden.

Hi J and R, I believe the yellow flower in your windowbox to be Erysimum, wall flower. Very fragrant and will self sow so don't be too eager to deadhead! :-) Love the baptisia, I find them difficult to photograph, you did a great job!

I am so glad you found Ameila. I know it will look so wonderful in your garden. Good idea about training one into a tree form.

Gosh Randy you gize have a lot blooming right now. I love your roses. I don't know a thing about them except that they are pretty.
The flowers in your window box are perfect together. I can see why you liked that azalea. The blooms look like roses to me. Not your typical azalea. I just love clematis too. I have a couple of them. Yours look so pretty. I bet they really keep the roses great company.

Maybe I just love my Gertrude Jekyll and that's all I can think about right now---but your mystery rose looks just like mine. I agree about the wallflower. All your blooms and placement of flowers looks perfect and so appealing. Very nice job you two.

Thank you Tina! Good to see you:-)

Jan,
You are absolutely right, all gardens look better in person. We've had some pretty hot days right here lately too. I hope we aren't in for a terrible heat wave this summer.

Dirt Princess,
I’m going to have to go on a gladiolus hunt, I have two friends that want some and going to have to see if I can find some more. I wish they multiplied faster.

Hey Monica!
It was Confederate Memorial Day. So for me it was a state holiday.:-)
Annie,
Everyone seems to agree with you about the wallflower. I don’t know if these have a scent or not, I’m going to have to sniff them. LOL

Cameron,
Thank you so much! I hope ours looks as beautiful as yours does one day soon.

Hey Phillip,
You are state employee… you didn’t get it?

Raquel,
I’m VERY glad we saved the Baptisia, it’s beautiful!

Flowrgirl1,
Good to see you at Our Eden, come back anytime you like.:-)

Frances,
I thought wall flowers were shy people, I didn’t know they were real. LOL I’m going to see if they have a scent when I get home.

Jan,
We are really pleased with Amelia! You keep finding all those great new plants! We’ve purchase two that we’ve seen on you blog because we thought they were cool.:-)

Anna,
It sure does look a lot like Gertrude Jekyll. This rose spreads by underground runners, does Gertrude?

Sweet Bay,
It’s always good to have you pay us a visit, thank you!

Lisa,
So sorry I missed you, I must have moved my mouse to much when I was scrolling down to reply. Thank you so much for the compliments. Jan at Always Growing is the one the found the Azalea, with out her we wouldn't even know it existed.

Wayne,
I can't wait to see your Siberians! You have inspired us to start a collection. :-)
