A Break From the Heat

DSC00451C

Doesn’t that picture look refreshing? These are photos that Jamie took at Chimney Rock Park on our vacation. I thought with all the heat you guys might enjoy a little cool water. The mist that you see in the air is the clouds in the mountain tops. Enjoy the pictures while I fill you in on the goings on in the garden.

Yesterday I thought I would brave the heat and snap a few photos for you. It’s been so hot outside this week I haven’t even walked around the garden. Tuesday the heat index was 110° and it was just miserable outside. I thought surely I would at least find something that I could take a picture of to share with you. Regrettably the garden is a sad sight now.

We are fortunate to have had the good sense to install a fairly complicated drip system last spring that waters everything in the entire yard for us, front, back and sides. With the exception of a couple of new plants that have been put in the ground recently. The hanging baskets, planters and even the birdbath are connected to it, so it all gets water. Even so, the sun is taking its toll on the plants. Yesterday as I walked around I found the plants blooming their hearts out only to have their petals dried to a brown crisp. Even the foliage is bleached shades of tan and yellow every where you look.

Not to worry, these temperatures can’t last forever. The rain will come; dead and damaged foliage and blooms will be removed and replaced by vibrant colors. All will be beautiful in our little Eden again and the blog will be filled with vivid photos. Saturday we start to work on the new bed again. Wish us luck and a speedy completion!

Beautiful photos. We have a 30% chance of rain today and I sure hope we get it! We need it!

The pictures sure are most refreshing. Good luck with your new garden. I am sure you'll love it. Boy do I wish I had a drip irrigation system. So tired of watering the pots.

Wanted to say also, the daylily breeder's garden I posted on today, it is where those red irises came from. Small world huh?

Beautiful Pictures. Kinda strange to hear you talk about Summer as we are rugging up.

Hope you get the relief you need.

Randy said...

DP, I just rushed to weather.com to see what our chances were when you said posted that. We only have a 10% chance. :-(

Tina,
That drip system was the best decision we ever made. We did our entire lot, front and back for probably less than 400 dollars and you don’t have to do it all at one time. We did it all in sections. That’s pretty cool about the iris!--Randy

Laura,
I hope we get it soon too. Everything in the garden looks so haggard.--Randy

I live about 2 hours from this park and need to go back. Beautiful photos and you captured it perfectly. It does look refreshing.

That's nice that you have an irrigation system for the baskets. Boy do they ever drink the water.

Randy said...

Anna,
The system is set to water the garden every other day during this time of the year. Sometimes when it's really hot we still have to water them on the days the system doesn't, but it certainly helps.

thank you, I do feel somewhat refreshed now! I have not forgotten about your coneflowers, I am paticular about the health of my plants when I share them. I promise they will be there soon.

Randy said...

Darla,
Not a problem, this heat is horrible right now anyway. I can just see them baking in a mail truck.--Randy

I'd like to have a waterfall that big to take breaks in while working in this heat. What bed are you starting next? The one along the back fence?

Lisa at Greenbow said...

These lovely photos almost made me forget how hot it is now. Ha... Thanks for the cooling images. I wish you the best of luck working on your new flower bed. I hope it cools down some by the weekend.

Randy said...

Lisa, I have to agree with Phillip. It would be wonderful to have one of those in our back yards wouldn't it. I bet that water is cold as ice.--Randy

Those photos made me long for a cool dip in that glorious water! ;) Hope you're right about the heat not lasting, it's been a scorching here with no signs of precipitation in the forecast. You guys were smart to put in that drip irrigation system, wish I had one. It would help that's for sure.

Randy said...

Racquel,
Putting in a drip system is so easy you couldn't possibly imagine. It goes in fast and the results are wonderful. I think everyone should do it. I may do a post on it a little later when we extend ours. (When it cools down some.)

It's been horribly hot here too. The weathermen are saying Sunday the temps should be down in the mid 80's. What a relief.

Your photos are wonderful. I can almost feel the mist from that waterfall...almost;) Thanks for researching those phlox for me, I'll call Midwest Ground Cover and see if they can help me find Volcano phlox.

I do not want to hear about drip irrigation or heat (although I am sure they may be interesting). I want to know about Chimney Rock Park, and is it that the one in North Carolina?

(my word verification is appropriately enough "ourist" like "tourist" without the first T)

Beautiful photos of Chimney Rock Park!

Everything in my garden was so wilted by 2 pm today. I'm having to water my containers everyday now. It will be 96 tomorrow, but we should get some rain on Saturday.

Stay cool!

Hello there boys ! Now that is one gorgeous place to find relief from the heat ! Even the sound is relaxing .. all natural ? : )
I don't know what the heck we are supposed to do when summers keep edging up in the heat humidity index .. do we sprout gills eventually ? dive in a pool of water ?? LOL
Wonderful pictures : )

Monica the Garden Faerie said...

It's hot and humid here (90 is hot for Michigan), too, but we had a huge downpour last night and a high of only 84 is predicted today. Thanks in any case for the nice refreshing water shots; always welcome!

Randy said...

Les,
Yes it is the one in North Carolina.

Cameron,
Everything looks so haggard in our garden right now I can barely find anything attractive about it. I was hoping for a little rain today.

Joy,
The only thing you can do in heat like this is to stay out of it. It doesn’t really get that bad in your neck of the woods does it?--Randy

Randy said...

Monica,
I'm so jealous you got rain! Enjoy the cooler temperatures. I bet you guys are miserable with temps that high. It's the humidity that makes it so bad here. Some days you can barely breathe.--Randy

Very beautiful photos and wonderfully done narrative ...What a juxtaposition, the cool misting water falls and the story of the heat's effect upon your garden. I hope the rains come soon or at least a break from these temperatures. gail

What gorgeous mountain photos! They are truly magnificent.

We're cooking/ grilling/ parboiling here too. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

Randy said...

Gail,
You taught me a new word today: juxtaposition. LOL I hope I don't sound ignorant, but I had to look it up. Learning new words it good, though and ironically I just read something yesterday suggesting that I try to learn at least one new word every day. Ahhhhhh synchronicity!

Heavens SweetBay! Parboiling sounds painful! I do hope we get some relief soon, we need it. AND can you believe it’s only June? What will July and August be like?

Lovely photos. We had a little rain on Wednesday afternoon and some cloudy weather Thursday. I sure hope this dry spell has broken. I, too, have many plants with brown leaves. It looks like I will have to move some hostas and holly ferns as they are now getting too much sun. Don't overdo it when working on your new garden bed. Be careful of the heat.

Jan,
We haven't had a drop here. They are saying maybe some thunderstorms
tomorrow. I hope so.--Randy

Hi There, Beautiful waterfall at Chimney Rock.. We've seen it from a distance but not close up yet.

George and I love waterfalls and have seen over 350 in 2001...

You are so lucky to have that yard-watering system. We are still watering by hand when we need to...

Hugs,
Betsy

Randy said...

Betsy! Welcome, welcome, welcome! So glad you paid us a visit. Over 350 falls? Wow! If you ever make it down to South Alabama there is one that very few people know about in Tumbleton, near Dothan. Any of the town folks can tell you how to get to it. :-)

Great pics!

Hi Randy, Thanks for telling me about that waterfall near Dothan... We have not seen that one.

I just added you to my followers list--so will be checking your blog regularly.

I love the curved lines in your new back garden. It's a tough time to start a new garden. Good luck!

Randy said...

Marily,
We don't really plan on planting a lot of things right now. We are going to ammend the soil, change the lay out of the irrigation system and mulch it. We may do some planting along the way but not a lot. :-)--Randy

NOw that is a waterfall!! Mine lacks the drama but I couldn't fit something like that in my backyard. LOL
